About this event

Italian National Space Day 2024

SPACE DESIGN: LIVING OUTSIDE PLANET EARTH

After Yuri Gagarin's first flight in 1961, 638 people travelled in outer space. Space stations were built and astronauts learned to live and work outside Earth for long periods. The transition from the pioneering phase, mainly scientific, to the New Space Economy, characterized by the involvement of institutional and private stakeholders from all over the world, accelerated the development of refined technological skills to allow a comfortable and safety stay in space. It became one of the drivers of investments in the space sector.

On the occasion of the Italian National Space Day 2024, the Embassy of Italy in Prague aims to offer a picture of the evolution of design for space environments. A journey into cutting-edge technical choices that engages Italian researchers and industries in the development of innovative and ergonomic solutions for living off Earth.

Design Spaziale Italiano is an itinerant multimedia project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to present and disseminate an avant-garde domain in our Country. The project, born and developed at the Politecnico di Milano in 2001, has contributed to confirm the strategic role of Italy in the space sector.

Design is the synthesis of creativity and innovation. It is a bridge between science, technology and beauty. It can shape space and make it accessible to everybody.

Space design projects us into a future living on other planets and in dealing with confined environments, reduced gravity and outer space experiences. It will definitely change the current way we perceive comfort and safety.

The project consists of exhibitions of physical products, digital contents, installations and videos that develop different narratives to highlight how the form and meaning of the objects we use in our daily activities change in the transition from Earth to Space.
